Gowanus Canal from Mark D Phillips

The Gowanus Canal is Brooklyn’s waterway of the future and the past. A Superfund site in a gentrifying neighborhood, the possibilities are endless. It has fascinated me for over 20 years. The canal has always been a disgusting, gross, totally cool location that for years no one went to but me (So I thought). Now it has become the “IN” place to both live and play. And it still hasn’t been cleaned yet. Over the years I have seen everything from a human body to a blue crab in its waters. Divers came out covered in the worst sludge I have ever seen. To think that there is hope on the horizon for a San Antonio River Walk in Brooklyn is amazing.
