Description
Entering the Sixth Street turning basin was always a trip. Sometimes it felt like back in time, sometimes it felt like you were entering Wonka Land. This day had the feel of both. The surface of the water was covered in the thickest oil I had ever seen on the Gowanus Canal. As I paddled into it with Brad Vogel, it looked like a strange view of the earth from space. The oil glistened so brightly in the sun that the buildings and vegetation just vanished from sight.
August 28, 2018 – This would be one of my last trips into the basin before we were cut off by the EPA for the Superfund cleanup, estimated to be over $1.5 billion. Originally scheduled to be completed in mid-2023, it’s now the end of 2025 and its still not done. The Gowanus Canal is located in one of the densest population centers in America.
