Mark D Phillips photographed thousands of events over his career as a photojournalist. That this one image is so well known is a double-edged sword. When you search on the Internet for him, it is the item that comes up over and over again.
One of the first websites to come out in Phillips' defense when the validity of the image was questioned, snopes.com debunks many of the issues involved with the photograph.
New York Magazine published the "Encyclopedia of 9/11" for the tenth anniversary. S leads with "Satan's Face In the smoke, a sign."
The image would not have been such an Internet phenomenon without the distribution by the Associated Press and its publication by two newspapers that used the photograph on nearly their entire front pages: The Saginaw News of Michigan and The News Journal of Wilmington, Delaware.
After ten years, the photograph is still requested regularly. It has been published in magazines, textbooks, Art Galleries, and more.
